Mario Fernández-Mazuecos

Botany, evolutionary biology, biogeography, conservation
Universidad Autónoma de Madrid
I apply phylogenetic approaches to uncover the keys to plant diversity at multiple evolutionary scales, from macroevolution, through speciation, to microevolution. In addition to phylogenetics and phylogenomics, I incorporate insights from biogeography, population genetics, species distribution modelling and evo-devo. Currently, my main research interest is the use of massive phylogenetic data sets to investigate plant evolutionary diversity end endemism through space and time and the effects on these of environmental changes, with a focus on the Mediterranean Region and island systems.

This includes the application of high-throughput sequencing techniques (such as genotyping-by-sequencing) to plant lineages of interest, as well as the mining and analysis of distribution and DNA sequence data in the framework of spatial phylogenetics.
My specific research topics include the following:
  • The relationship between flower evolution and pollinator interactions.
  • Speciation and colonization patterns and processes in the Mediterranean and Macaronesian regions.
  • The effect of Quaternary climatic cycles on biodiversity.
  • The application of phylogenetic approaches to conservation of Iberian endemic plants.
